BUG: Error Message When You Send a Whisper to a User Who Has Whispers Turned Off (323156)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to send a Whisper message to a user who has the Whispers option turned off, you receive the following error message (where nickname is the name of the recipient):
"Whisper from "nickname": ERR"

CAUSE

The Whisper option is turned off on the receiving computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

To reproduce the behavior, follow these steps:
  1. On a set-top box (STB) running MSN Communications Applications for Microsoft TV, sign in to Chat, and then sign in to a chat room as Test1.
  2. On a computer running Microsoft Windows XP, do the following:
    1. Sign in to MSN Chat by using your browser, and then sign in to a chat room as Test2.
    2. On the navigation bar, click Chat Room Options, click to select Turn off all new Whispers, and then click Done.
  3. On the STB, send a Whisper message to Test2.
