Effective Permissions Are Not Cleared When Control Is Indirectly Cleared (323074)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
This article was previously published under Q323074 SYMPTOMS If you clear the permission check box control on the Security tab of the properties for a file system object, all of the
applicable effective permissions are not cleared. As a result, you may allow or
deny more permissions than you intend to. For example, if the check
box for the Full Control permission is selected, and you clear the check box
for the Modify permission, the check box for the Full Control permission is
automatically cleared. However, if you click the Advanced button to view the effective permissions, you see that the
following permissions are incorrectly listed:
- Delete Subfolders and Files
- Change Permissions
- Take Ownership
The permissions are correct if you clear the check box for the
Full Control permission, and then click the check box for the Modify
permission. CAUSE This problem occurs because the Security properties control
state handlers do not explicitly mask off control values that are automatically
cleared. RESOLUTIONA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
