FIX: Out of Memory or Significant Delay Occurs When You Expand a Cube or Edit a Dimension in Analysis Manager (322911)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services

This article was previously published under Q322911
BUG #: 12857 (Plato7x)
BUG #: 12864 (Plato7x)

SYMPTOMS

If a cube contains a large number of partitions and several designed aggregations for the partitions, the edit of a shared dimension or expansion of a cube node to list all the partitions may take several minutes, or longer. During the delay, the CPU utilization is high for the MMC.exe process and the memory usage steadily increases. You may experience out of memory errors in situations where the number of partitions and aggregations is extremely high.

CAUSE

The Microsoft Decision Support Objects (DSO) library, used by Analysis Manager, reads the meta data information for Analysis Services objects from the Analysis Services repository. When you expand a cube node in Analysis Manager, the MDStores collection for the partitions of the cube is populated together with all other children of the cube in the DSO object model. This includes the aggregations collection for each partition in the cube. The time and the memory the computer must have to populate the collection of partitions, and their associated aggregations, increases with the number of partitions in the cube and the number of aggregations in each partition. This update reduces how much memory is used and the time that it takes to parse and store the partitions and aggregations.
