FIX: Deadlock May Occur During Update Statistics on System Tables (322868)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions)
This article was previously published under Q322868 BUG #: 357358 (SHILOH_BUGS) SYMPTOMS Concurrent connections that issue Data Definition Language
(DDL) commands (CREATE, DROP, or ALTER object) may cause enough modifications
to the system tables to trigger AUTO _UPDATE_STATISTICS. If two connections run
these commands simultaneously, a deadlock may occur: Msg
1205: Transaction (Process ID 50) was deadlocked on lock resources with
another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the
transaction. CAUSE A system table-specific locking optimization permitted
multiple connections to acquire a lock for update statistics, leading to a
subsequent deadlock. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, obtain the latest
service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click
