Windows Explorer Quits and Generates an Error Message When You Try to Map a Network Drive (322857)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to map a drive in Windows Explorer to a network share or to a Web location, Windows Explorer may quit, and then you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Windows XP:

Explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

In Windows 2000:

Access Violation

Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the mapped network drive name contains more than 300 characters.

RESOLUTION

Windows XP

To resolve this problem, install the latest service pack for Windows XP.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1). This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
