Discussions Do Not Work with Some Combinations of IIS Authentication (322839)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001

This article was previously published under Q322839

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Discussion feature of SharePoint Portal Server, you may receive the following error message when you insert a discussion for a document:
SharePoint Portal Server: Error
Error Number: 3593
Description: An unspecified error has occurred.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you use some combinations of Internet Information Services (IIS) authentication methods.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Integrated Microsoft Windows Authentication method when possible. If you use the Integrated Microsoft Windows Authentication method, a discussion entry can be added and labeled as originating from the user.

In configurations in which you cannot use the Integrated Microsoft Windows Authentication method (for example, if authentication is performed through a proxy server), use Basic and Anonymous authentication. If you use Basic and Anonymous authentication, a discussion entry can be added, but the entry is labeled as originating from an anonymous user.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
