SYMPTOMS

If you replace a compact disc read-only memory (CD-ROM) with a blank compact disc-recordable (CD-R), and then start Windows Explorer, the files from the CD-ROM appear. Windows Explorer does not detect that the CD-ROM that was previously in the CD drive has been replaced with a blank CD-R.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

If the CD-ROM contains software, the files for the software appear in Windows Explorer even though the software CD-ROM is no longer present in the CD drive.
