Backup Does Not Fully Restore Multi-Path Software (322757)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
This article was previously published under Q322757 SYMPTOMS
After you complete a full restoration of a Windows 2000-based computer, you may experience the following symptoms:
- You may not be able to obtain access to the external storage.
- Reinstallation of the HBA adapters may result in a stop error message.
Note that the removal of the multi-path software does not change this behavior.
CAUSE
Multi-path software must create a "virtual bus" to properly enumerate all the drives and devices that are attached to its associated HBA
controllers. When a full restoration of a Windows 2000-based computer is completed, some registry entries are skipped. The multi-path software is dependent on the restoration of the information that is stored in the following registry key that is not restored:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CCS\ENUM
After this occurs, the multi-path software tries to enumerate devices on the virtual bus, but the virtual bus cannot be created.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior:
- Complete the clean installation of Windows 2000.
- Before you complete the full restoration of the backup, install the correct drivers for the HBA controllers, and then install and configure the multi-path software.
This procedure ensures that the multi-path software can connect to the devices that are attached to its virtual bus.
STATUSThis behavior is by design.
