You May Not Be Able to Install Windows Services for Unix 2.x on Windows XP (322664)

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to install Windows Services for UNIX 2.x on Windows XP.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you tried to install either Telnet Server or Telnet Client (or both). These Windows Services for UNIX 2.x components are older versions than the versions of these components that are included with Windows XP.

MORE INFORMATION

The version of Telnet Server that is included with Windows XP does not have as many features as the version that is included with Windows Services for UNIX 2.x. The version of Telnet Server in Windows XP has a connection limit of 2; however, the version of Telnet Server that is included with Windows Services for UNIX 2.x has a connection limit of 63. Additionally, the version of Telnet Server that is included with Windows Services for UNIX 2.x has many more administrative capabilities.

WORKAROUND

To install Windows Services for UNIX 2.x on Windows XP, do not select Telnet Server or Telnet Client during the installation process. To use a full-featured version of Telnet Server on Windows XP, install Windows Services For UNIX 3.0.
