Msinfo32.exe causes Userenv Event ID 1000 in Windows 2000 (322656)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Msinfo32.exe and save the information to a text file on the hard disk drive, you may receive the following error message:
DETAIL - Access is denied. , Build number ((2195)).
When this error message occurs, you may receive the following Event ID 1000 event message in the event log: Event ID 1000
Windows cannot unload your registry file. If you have a roaming profile, your settings are not replicated. Contact your administrator.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Winmgmt.exe holds a handle to a registry key in the user's profile. Therefore, Windows cannot unload the user profile.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, this problem may occur even if you have installed the Q285192 hotfix. The Q285192 hotfix is for Internet Explorer 5.01 for Windows 2000. Therefore, if you install Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, this problem recurs. Therefore, to resolve this problem in Internet Explorer 5.5, you must install the Q285192 hotfix before you install the hotfix that is described in this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, restart the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service.
