You cannot specify the location of the default Client Access Point when you install Systems Management Server (322588)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

This article was previously published under Q322588

SYMPTOMS

When you install a new Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) site, you cannot specify the location of the Client Access Point (CAP). On the Installation Options screen of the SMS Setup Wizard, you can designate the folder that will contain the SMS core files. However, you cannot specify the drive, the folder, or the server for the default CAP during initial site installation. By default, the CAP will be created on the site server. The CAP will be created on the drive with the most available space, and the folder name will be CAP_sitecode.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the default CAP and re-create it in the preferred location after you install the SMS site.

To remove the default CAP, follow these steps:
  1. On the original site system computer, click Start, point to Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
  2. Expand Site Database, expand Site Hierarchy, expand SiteCode-SiteName, expand Site Settings, and then click Site Systems.
  3. In the right pane of the SMS Administrator Console, right-click \\ServerName, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Client Access Point tab.
  5. Click to clear the Use this site system as a client access point check box, and then click OK.

Note When you disable the only CAP for your site, a warning appears that states that clients will no longer be able to communicate with SMS. Click Yes to remove the CAP.
After the default CAP has been removed, the new CAP can be created on a new server or share.

To create the new CAP, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
  2. Expand Site Database, expand Site Hierarchy, expand SiteCode-SiteName, expand Site Settings, and then click Site Systems.
  3. Right-click Site Systems and then click New.
  4. Select Server or Server Share.

If you select Server, you can specify a new server for the CAP. Click Set to define the server name. When you specify a CAP on a server, the CAP will be created on the drive that has the most available space and the folder name will be CAP_sitecode.

If you select Server Share, you can specify a new share for the CAP. The share name must be defined in the form \\Server Name\Share Name by clicking Set. When you specify a CAP on a share, you can control the drive and folder names for the CAP. You must create the share before you select this option.
  5. Click the Client Access Point tab.
  6. Click to select the Use this site system as a client access point check box, and then click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
