SYMPTOMS

After you advertise a package to a user group collection, some clients do not receive the advertisement.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The destination client is running an English version of software or other single-byte character set (SBCS) software.
  • The destination user group contains double-byte character set (DBCS) characters, such as Japanese characters or Chinese characters.
A client that is running SBCS software cannot correctly read a name that contains DBCS characters. When the client that is running SBCS software tries to read a name that contains DBCS characters, the client incorrectly translates the DBCS characters as question mark (?) characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, move the client that is running SBCS software to a collection that does not contain DBCS characters, and then advertise the package to the SBCS collection.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
