SYMPTOMS
Microsoft Windows may stop unexpectedly and an error message
may appear on a blue screen if the following conditions exist:
- The Directory Services Client for Windows 95 and Windows 98
is installed (this is available on the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
CD).
- You map a drive to a Distributed File System (DFS)
fault-tolerant (domain) DFS root, using the following format:
\\NetBIOSDomainName\DFSRootShareName
- You try to access the mapped drive.
If you right-click
Network Neighborhood and then map the drive (this automatically opens a shell folder),
you receive the following error message:
Windows
An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:????????.
The current application will be terminated.
* Press and key to
attempt to continue.
* Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer. You
will
lose any unsaved information in all applications.
Press
any key to continue
If you map the drive in a logon script (or from
a command prompt) and then double-click
My Computer, or if you click
Start, click
Run, and then type a path on the drive (for example,
Drive:), you receive the following error message:
Windows
An exception 0E has occurred at
0028:???????? in VXD IFSMGR(04)
+ 0000B006. The current application will
be terminated.
* Press and key to attempt to continue.
* Press
CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer. You will
lose any unsaved
information in all applications.
Press any key to continue
If you try to access the mapped drive from a command prompt or from
a logon script, you receive the following error message:
Title: MS-DOS Prompt (or icon title)
Text: This program has
an illegal operation and will be terminated.
Quit all programs, then
restart your computer.
If the program consistently encounters
problems, click the Start button,
then select Help, Troubleshooting, and
'If you have trouble running
MS-DOS programs'.

RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, use a DNS-style fully
qualified domain name (FQDN) that is similar to the following example:
\\DomainName.com\DFSRootShareName
This method works correctly only if the FQDN is NetBIOS
compatible (that is, the domain name contains fewer than 16
characters).
This method may not work if the fault-tolerant root is
hosted on a domain controller.
