FIX: You cannot use the Add GUID feature when you create user objects in Active Directory Services Interface (ADSI) (322291)

SYMPTOMS

When you migrate users from a Site Server environment to the Microsoft Active Directory directory service, the process is easier if you can use data from Site Server to populate Active Directory.

For example, if you use a GUID that is provided by Site Server to track users who are in other databases, you may want to associate this GUID with new Active Directory users. To do this, you have to be able to set the objectGUID property of a new user object.

You can set the objectGUID property when you create other objects in Active Directory. However, you cannot set the objectGUID property when you create User objects. If you try to do this, you receive error messages that indicate that the directory is unwilling to perform the action or that the property has already been set. For example, when you try to do this by using Microsoft Visual Basic Script, you receive the following error message:

Run-Time Error '-2147016651' (80072035)
Automation Error
The server is unwilling to process the request

This problem may affect migration from any foreign directory to Active Directory. For example, the problem may occur when you try to use GUIDs from the old directory to populate the objectGUID property of new user objects in Active Directory.

CAUSE

Note the difference between modifying the objectGUID of an existing object and supplying an objectGUID for a new object. The differences are as follows:
  • Beginning in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you must explicitly configure the Active Directory forest to Permissive Add mode to permit the objectGUID property to be set for any new object.
  • Although Windows 2000 does not implement this feature, this hotfix changes Active Directory behavior to permit an objectGUID to be supplied when you create a new User object.

    Changing the objectGUID of an existing object is not supported.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.
