Money: "Setup Is Unable to Register Tasks" Error Message When You Install Money on a Windows XP-Based Computer (322155)

SYMPTOMS If you try to install Microsoft Money on a Microsoft
Windows XP-based computer, you may receive an error message similar to the
following: Setup is unable to register tasks.
CAUSE This issue may occur if either of the following conditions
are true:
- There are corrupted registry keys.
- There are remaining registry keys from a previous
installation of Money that has been removed.
RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, either add administrative
permissions to the Money registry key, or completely remove and then reinstall
Money. To do this, use one of the following methods.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. Method 1: Add Administrative Permissions- Click Start, and then click
Run.
- In the Open box, type
regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft - Right-click the Money subkey, and then
click Permissions.
- In the Group or user names list, click
Administrators, and then click
Add.
- Click to select the Allow check box in the
Full Control row.
- Click Apply, and then click
OK.
- Restart your computer.
Method 2: Remove Money Folders and Registry Keys and Reinstall MoneyQuit All Running Programs- Restart your computer, and then log on as
Administrator.
- Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task
Manager.
- In the list of running programs, click a program, and then
click End Task.
- Repeat step 3 until you have quit each program.
Display Hidden Files- On the desktop, double-click My
Computer.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder
Options.
- Click the View tab.
- In the Advanced Settings list, click
Show hidden files and folders.
- Click to clear the Hide protected operating system
files check box.
- Click Apply, and then click
OK.
Remove MoneyNote Make a backup of your Money data files before you follow these
steps.
- Click Start, and then click
Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove
Programs.
- Click Microsoft Money, and then click
Remove.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the removal
process.
- Repeat steps 3 through 4 to remove any programs that are
associated with Money (Microsoft Money System Pack or a previous version of
Money).
- Close Control Panel.
Delete Money Folders- Start Windows Explorer.
- Locate the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Money
- Right-click the folder, and then click
Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the
deletion, click Yes. - Repeat steps 2 through 3 to delete the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money
Delete Associated Registry Keys- Click Start, and then click
Run.
- In the Open box, type
regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Money - Right-click the key, and then click
Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the
deletion, click Yes. - Repeat steps 3 through 4 to delete the following registry
keys:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Money
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Money
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Money
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MoneySide
- Quit the Registry Editor, and then restart your
computer.
Install Money- Insert your Money CD-ROM.
If the installation
process does not start automatically, continue to follow these
steps: - Click Start, and then click
Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove
Programs.
- In the left pane, click Add New
Programs.
- In the right pane, click CD or
Floppy.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the
installation process.
- Restart your computer.
