You Receive a VAIFY 0x80072efe Error Message During SharePoint Portal Server Setup (321814)

When you are installing SharePoint Portal Server, a VAIFY error may occur. The Errorlog.txt that is created during Setup contains the following error message:
[01/01/02,12:00:00] SharePoint Portal Server: [2] CVAIComponent, Error 0x80072efe: VAIFy failed
[01/01/02,12:00:00] SharePoint Portal Server: [0] CVAIComponent::Install, Error setting up VAI.
NOTE: SharePoint Portal Server Setup log files are located in the system_drive\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\SharePoint Portal Server\Logs folder.
On the SharePoint Portal Server, the Application event log in Event Viewer also contains the following error messages:

CAUSE
This problem may occur if a host header is specified on the Web Site Identification tab of the default Web site properties.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, remove the host header from the default Web site:
- Start Internet Services Manager:
- Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Administrative Tools.
- Click Internet Services Manager.
- Right-click the Web site that you want to configure (for example, click Default Web Site), and then click Properties.
- Click the Web Site tab, and then click the Internet Protocol (IP) address that you want the site to use.
NOTE: If you only have one IP address on the server, click All Unassigned, and then set the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) port that you want to use (typically 80). - Click Advanced.
- In the Multiple identities for this Web Site list, click the identity that you want to use.
- Click Edit, and then remove the host header name.
- Apply these changes, and then start the Web site if it is not already running.
- Run SharePoint Portal Server Setup again and select Repair mode.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
