SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Windows 2000-based computers that are running Microsoft COM+ or Microsoft COM server-side applications may stop responding to any remote procedure call (RPC) request if any client computers are running Microsoft Windows 98.

CAUSE

A bug in DCOM 1.3 on Windows 98-based computers can cause Windows 2000 Server to stop responding to any RPC requests. RPC threads on the Windows 2000 Server computer that try to contact the Windows 98 client computer are indefinitely blocked, and the RPC threads cannot handle any more RPC client requests.

RESOLUTION
