Hyperlinks to bookmarked tasks are incorrect in Microsoft Project (321666)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you click a hyperlink for a task that uses a bookmarked task as its destination, you may find that the hyperlink does not reference the correct location (task). For example, the Task Information dialog box for a different task appears instead of the Task Information dialog box for the task that you originally defined as the destination.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You create a hyperlink for a task that uses a bookmarked task as its destination.

    -and-
  • You insert new tasks or remove existing tasks.
A hyperlink uses the task ID, instead of the unique ID or task name, as its destination. If you insert new tasks or remove existing tasks, the task names that are associated with the task IDs may change. As a result, although the hyperlink refers to the same task ID, it may link to a different task name.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

You can use a bookmarked task in Microsoft Project as the destination for a hyperlink in another task. When you click the hyperlink, the Task Information dialog box for the bookmarked task appears. To create a hyperlink to a bookmarked task, follow these steps:
  1. Open your project file.
  2. Click the task in which you want to insert the hyperlink, and then click Hyperlink on the Insert menu.
  3. Under Link to, click Existing File or Web page, and then click Bookmark.
  4. In the Enter the task or resource ID box, type the task ID of the task that you want to use as the destination.
  5. Under Select a view in this project, expand Views, click the view that you want (for example, Gantt Chart), and then click OK.
  6. In the Text to display box, type the text that you want to display for the hyperlink, and then click OK.
  7. If you want to add a ScreenTip to the hyperlink, click ScreenTip, type the text that you want the ScreenTip to display, and then click OK.
  8. Click OK.
