WD2000: Page Numbers All Become the Same When You Protect a Word Document for Comments (321609)

SYMPTOMS

In a multiple-page Word 2000 document, when you click Protect Document on the Tools menu, and then click Comments, all the page numbers in the document become the same (all "Page 3," for example). When you unprotect the document, the page numbers become correct again.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Office 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, unprotect the document. To do this, click Unprotect Document on the Tools menu.

Note: If you protect the document for forms, this appears to maintain the correct page numbering.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The page numbering in the scenario described in the "Symptoms" section of this article depends on the page that the mouse pointer is located on when the document is protected. If the pointer is on page 3, each page is numbered "Page 3."
