SYMPTOMS

The authentication process seems to function; however, on any page that uses Active User Object (AUO) authentication, you receive one (or both) of the following error messages:
80020009 Web Server instance is not mapped to a membership service.
-2147352567 This Web Server instance is not mapped to a membership server instance, Error number -424, Object Required.

CAUSE

These errors occur because:
  • In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, the application protection of the Web site is set to Run in Separate Memory Space.

    -or-
  • In Microsoft Windows 2000, the Application Protection setting is set to anything other than Low.

WORKAROUND

  • In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, click to clear Run in Separate Memory Space.

    -or-
  • In Microsoft Windows 2000, set the Application Protection setting to Low.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
