"A Problem Has Been Encountered While Loading the Setup Components" Error Message When You Run Setup (321393)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install SharePoint Portal Server, you may receive the following error message:
A problem has been encountered while loading the Setup components.
Canceling Setup.
As a result, you cannot install SharePoint Portal Server.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Microsoft Visual InterDev 6.0 is installed on the computer before you try to install SharePoint Portal Server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Remove Visual InterDev 6.0 by using the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
  2. Install SharePoint Portal Server.
  3. Reinstall Visual InterDev 6.0.
