The Microsoft Project 2002 Setup program appears to stop responding while preparing to install (321369)

SYMPTOMS

Your computer may appear to stop responding (hang) during the installation of Microsoft Project 2002. Setup may appear to stop responding while the Preparing to install dialog box is displayed.

NOTE: Setup may appear to stop responding, but is actually proceeding. Setup will eventually complete successfully with no further intervention.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
  • Your computer is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 2000.
  • The Windows Installer has not been updated.
  • Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 has not been installed (if you are using Windows 2000).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Wait for Setup to Complete

Because Setup only appears to stop responding, you can wait, and eventually the installation will be successfully competed. No intervention is required. Setup may be slow to complete. Allow the setup process a few minutes to continue and complete successfully.

Method 2: Install Windows Installer 2.0

This issue does not occur if the Windows installer has been installed. Therefore, to resolve this issue, install Windows Installer 2.0 for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. Windows Installer 2.0 supports Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later and Windows 2000.
