SUMMARY

Microsoft Project Server supports Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Database Engine (MSDE) 2000 or later. To use the enterprise features of Microsoft Project Professional and Microsoft Project Server, you must use SQL Server 2000.

SQL Server 2000 is available in several different editions, including the following:
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition
In most situations, you can use SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition as your database solution with Microsoft Project Server. SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition includes Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services, which is required if you want to use the Portfolio Analyzer feature of Microsoft Project Server.

If you want to view Portfolio Analyzer reports from the extranet, the advanced analysis features of SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition are required.

Microsoft Project Server does not support Oracle as a database. Microsoft Project Server requires SQL Server to use the Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) Analysis feature and stored procedures.

However, you can use Oracle databases with Microsoft Project Server if WorkGroup is defined as Microsoft Project 2000 and Microsoft Project Server, or Microsoft Project Standard and Microsoft Project Server together. Users of Microsoft Project 2000 and Microsoft Project Standard can publish projects to Microsoft Project Server.

Note that the Microsoft Project Server database requires Microsoft SQL Server; however, users can also save their original projects to an Oracle database server.

In Enterprise Mode (Microsoft Project Professional and Microsoft Project Server), Microsoft Project Professional users typically save their projects to the Microsoft Project Server database, so that their projects are saved in Microsoft SQL Server 2000.
