XCCC: OWA Puts a Different User Name in the From Field When You Post to a Public Folder (321291)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q321291

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) to post a note to a public folder, the From field for the note displays the alias of the user who is logged on to the Windows 2000 workstation instead of the alias of the user who was authenticated by OWA.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) does not distinguish between a private user (the user who is logged on to the workstation) and a public user (the user who is logged on to the OWA mailbox).

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, log the current user off of the workstation. Then you can log on to the workstation, access OWA, and post to public folders with the correct user name in the From field.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When a different user is logged on to Windows 2000 with a mail-enabled account, and you open Microsoft Internet Explorer to use OWA to connect to a mailbox, and you supply the appropriate credentials, you may have an issue when you post to public folders.

The From field for posts to public folders displays the user name of the user who is logged on to the Windows 2000 workstation instead of your user name. The public folders redirect takes the credentials of the Windows 2000 client and does not pass your credentials as the OWA user.
