Directory Browsing Shows the Same Domain Name Multiple Times (321273)

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q321273

SYMPTOMS

If you use Active Directory browsing by clicking Browse in the Find Printers tool, or by opening My Network Places, clicking Entire Network, and then clicking Directory, you may see the same domain name multiple times. You cannot distinguish between these domains.

CAUSE

Active Directory browsing displays only the leftmost label of Active Directory domain names. This label may be the same for some domains that have the same hierarchical level.

RESOLUTION

You can resolve this problem by removing the Read permission from users who do not have to browse other domains. If you remove the Read permission from a user, that user cannot expand a domain that is listed after the user clicks Browse in the Find Printers tool.

NOTE: Use this method only if users do not require access to other domain containers.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

For example, if a forest root domain is named Microsoft.com and there are two separate domain trees that are named Microsoft.net and Microsoft.itg.org, you see Microsoft listed three times in the browsing pane. You cannot determine from this view which Active Directory fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or NetBIOS name is masked.
