SUMMARY

Web Telephony Engine (WTE) is no longer available for download and there will be no more releases of WTE. Software developers may want to investigate the Microsoft .NET Speech Software Development Kit (for more information about the Microsoft .NET Speech Software Development Kit, see the "More Information" section of this article).

Microsoft no longer performs any development work on WTE. Furthermore, WTE is no longer available for download and the May 2002 (or later) release of the Platform Software Development Kit (SDK) will no longer include documentation or files for WTE development.

The only supported version of WTE is version 1.0, which was included with the Platform SDK between February 2000 and July 2001. To determine which version of WTE you have, view the file version information for Mswtesrv.exe. This file is included with file version 1.0.924.0 for WTE 1.0.

There is no hotfix support available for WTE.

Microsoft provided a limited beta distribution of WTE (known as "Web Telephony Engine beta for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5" or "WTE 2.0"), but this version was never released in any form other than the beta version. Any file with a version later than 1.0.924.0 is a beta version. These beta versions were provided "as is" and will not be supported.

Microsoft plans to release an SDK and server based on the newly emerging Speech Application Language Tags (SALT) standard that extends HTML and XHTML to add telephony and multimodal access to Web applications. Microsoft recently released a technical preview of the SDK (called the .NET Speech SDK). For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
