You Cannot Download Mail from a Server Without UIDL Support (321119)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002

This article was previously published under Q321119

SYMPTOMS

When you try to receive e-mail messages from some servers by using Post Office Protocol (POP3), you may receive the following error message:
Messages could not be downloaded as your POP3 server does not provide a unique identifier for each message.

CAUSE

This message is expected for POP3 servers that do not support unique-ID listing (UIDL).

RESOLUTION

Most POP3 servers support UIDL. In some cases, this must be configured on the server.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The UIDL of a message is an arbitrary server-determined string that uniquely identifies a message in a maildrop. The UIDL persists across sessions. The UIDL is typically used by e-mail programs to uniquely identify messages between synchronization sessions.
