Default Profile Is Always Used When You Log On, Roaming and Mandatory Profiles Are Not Applied (321043)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0

This article was previously published under Q321043

SYMPTOMS

When you try to log on to a Windows NT 4.0 domain, you may find that the default profile is always used, unless you log on as the Administrator. This occurs even though you are using Roaming Profiles or Mandatory Profiles.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the user account is a member of the Domain Guests group and also the Domain Users group. A Domain Guests account always receives the Default Profile at each logon process, because the most restrictive permissions from the two groups are applied.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, remove the user account from the Domain Guests group, and confirm that the user account is added to the Domain Users group.
