BUG: You Cannot Install Internet Explorer 6.0 After You Install the German MUI on Windows 2000 (321032)

SYMPTOMS

After you install the German multilingual user interface (MUI) and set the menus and dialog boxes to German, Internet Explorer version 6 (English) stops responding and you receive errors similar to the following:
wscript.exe (or cscript.exe) caused errors and was closed. Start the program again.

CAUSE

The resource files that the German MUI installs do not match the resource files that the Windows Script Host (WSH) version 5.6 looks for during the installation.

RESOLUTION

This problem was corrected in Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This behavior may occur in other languages.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Install the German MUI.
  2. Change the default language setting for the Menus and Dialogs to Deutch (German).
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Install the English version of Internet Explorer 6.0.

    Notice that the final steps of the Internet Explorer installation generate the error.
