Unreadable Font Appears in Some Fields in Web Discussion Window (321016)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001, when used with:
- the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
This article was previously published under Q321016 SYMPTOMS
When you try to view a Web discussion in a SharePoint Portal Server workspace from a Windows NT 4.0-based computer, the Author, Text, Subject, and Time fields for the document may contain unreadable characters (for example, the fields may contain rectangles, squares, arrows, or other symbol characters). However, if you copy any of the text in these fields into a document in a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word or Notepad, the text in these fields is readable.
CAUSE
This issue may occur if the client computer cannot find the font that it must have to display the page correctly. Under these circumstances, the computer tries the next font in the font list. If that font does not contain alphabetical characters (for example, Wingdings), the text is not readable.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, force the computer to reorder the fonts. To do so, follow these steps:
- Start Windows Explorer on the client computer.
- Locate and then double-click the %SystemRoot%\Fonts folder (typically, C:\Winnt\Fonts).
- Drag any font from this folder to the desktop (for example, drag Arial.ttf).
This removes the font from the computer. - Drag that same font from the desktop back to the %SystemRoot%\Fonts folder.
This reinstalls the font on the computer and rebuilds the font list. - Restart the workstation.
