SYMPTOMS

When you use Internet Explorer to download a file to a network share, you may receive the following error message:
This file is on a network drive with Create but no Modify privileges. Ask the administrator of this network to change this condition.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you do not have the correct permissions for the network share in question. You must have both Delete and Modify permissions for the network share because, during the download process, Internet Explorer creates a placeholder with the same name as the file being downloaded. Internet Explorer then deletes the file before writing the new file to the share.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact your administrator to make sure that you have both Delete and Modify permissions for the network share in question.

MORE INFORMATION

After you close the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, another dialog box appears that gives you the option to overwrite the existing file on the share. You can do this, provided that you have Modify permissions for files on that share.
