SUMMARY

In Windows XP and the Windows Server family, Remote Desktop Connection is already included in the operating system. You can install and run earlier versions of Microsoft Windows Terminal Server 4.0 client and Microsoft Windows Terminal Services 5.0 client on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003; however this action is not supported by Microsoft.

In special situations, developers and testers who develop programs that use the Terminal Server virtual channels may want to run earlier versions of Terminal Services client alongside computers that are running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 for convenience when they test software.

In Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2003, the MSLicensing value in the following registry key is restricted so that only administrators have Full Control permissions to this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing\Store

If you are using earlier versions of Terminal Server client or Terminal Services client (versions 4.0 or 5.0), you must have the appropriate permissions to write to and modify this value. To work around this behavior, you must either be a member of the local Administrators group on the client computer or an administrator must give you Full Control permissions for the MSLicensing value.
