Links: "STOP: Invalid allocation" error message while playing Links (320465)

SYMPTOMS

While playing Links 2001, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
STOP: Invalid allocation nnnnnnnn
Note The end of the error message contains a memory address.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if your installation of Links or Zone.com software is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove and then reinstall Links and Zone.com. To do this, follow these steps.Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Links 2001, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove Links.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to remove Zone.com.

    The software is listed as Zone.com or MSN Gaming Zone.
  6. Remove the Zone.com Heartbeat ActiveX control.
  7. Empty the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  8. Insert Links 2001 Disc 1 into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  9. Click Install, click Next, and then click Change.
  10. In the Path box, change the destination folder name, click OK, and when you are prompted to create the folder, click Yes.

    Note Change the destination folder name to a name that is different from the original folder name so that the program will be installed in a clean folder.
  11. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Links 2001.
  12. Visit the following Zone.com Web site to reinstall the Zone software: Note The Heartbeat ActiveX Control is automatically reinstalled with the Zone software.
  13. Install Microsoft Windows Media Player version 7.1 or later. A self-installing version of Windows Media Player 7.1 may be found in the root directory of Microsoft Links 2003, Disc 1. The file name is Mp71.exe.
