Outlook 2002, the Outgoing server (SMTP) field is limited to four digits. In previous versions of
Microsoft Outlook, this field could hold six digits. WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, locate the value in the registry
that stores the Outgoing server (SMTP) four digit value and modify the value to
contain six digits. WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To do this, use the following steps. Note Before you use the following steps, locate the Outgoing server (SMTP) field, and type 1234. This four digit number will help you
identify the correct entry in the registry that stores the Outgoing server (SMTP) value.
- Quit Outlook 2002.
- Click Start, and then click
Run.
- In the Open box, type
regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate, and then click to select the following registry
key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\UserProfile
where UserProfile is the key
that represents the name of the profile that you are configuring. - With the preceding key selected, click
Edit, and then click Find.
- In the Find what field, enter SMTP Port, and then click Find Next. When you find the correct SMTP Port value in the registry, select the value.
Note You will know when you have found the correct value because it will be set to 1234. - With the preceding value selected, click Edit, and then click Modify.
- Click Decimal.
- In the Value data box, type the 6 digit number that you want to set the Outgoing server (SMTP) field to, and then click OK.
- On the File menu, click
Exit to quit Registry Editor.

has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
