AutoPlay May Not Work After You Insert a "Memory Stick" (320281)

After you insert a Sony "Memory Stick" into a computer with a fresh installation of Windows XP for the first time, the AutoPlay functionality of your Windows XP-based computer may not work. However, after you insert the Memory Stick into your Windows XP-based computer, the AutoPlay functionality may start to work again.
CAUSE
The AutoPlay routine may not be called because Windows XP has not fully initialized the Sony Memory Stick device in the registry.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, restart the system with a Memory Stick inserted in the Memory Stick slot. This should reinitialize the Memory Stick registry entry.

By design, when you insert removable media into a computer, the Windows XP AutoPlay functionality may play CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, or prompt you to select what to do with the media. For example, you may be prompted to either play or edit a .wav file.
The symptom that is described in this article only rarely occurs, and only occurs until you insert the Sony Memory Stick is inserted for the second or later time. When you do so, the Sony Memory Stick is already initialized in the registry, and this symptom does not occur again.
