SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Office XP Developer Package and Deployment Wizard to create a Access run-time application for an Access database (.mdb) or an Access project (.adp) on a computer that has the Office 97 Developer Edition installed, either the computer stops responding (hangs) or you receive the following error message:
Automation Error. Application-defined or Object-defined error.

CAUSE

By design, you cannot run multiple versions of Office Developer on the same computer.

RESOLUTION

Remove Office 97 Developer Edition from the computer, and then repair/reinstall Office XP Developer.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior
  1. Perform a clean installation of any operating system that supports Office XP.
  2. Install Microsoft Access 97 SR1.
  3. Install Microsoft Outlook 98.
  4. Install Microsoft Office 97 Developer Edition.
  5. Install Office XP with complete options for Microsoft Access 2002, Microsoft Excel 2002, Microsoft Word 2002, and Microsoft PowerPoint 2002. Do not install Outlook 2002.
  6. Install Office XP Developer Package and Deployment Wizard only.
  7. Create an Access 97 run-time package that uses an Access 97 application. Note that this process works. An installable package is created successfully.
  8. Use the Office XP Developer Package and Deployment wizard to create an Access 2002 run-time package. Note that you are prompted for the Office XP CD to create the run-time application. However, when you try to create the run-time application, the process hangs. If you stop the process manually, an incomplete Setup folder is created.
