How to remove and reinstall IIS and Exchange (320202)

SUMMARY

If you have to reinstall Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) on the server that is also running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you have to reinstall Exchange at the same time to restore links to IIS that provide Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Outlook Web Access (OWA) functionality. This article describes how to reinstall both IIS and Exchange while preserving the existing Exchange Information Store.

Step 1: Back Up Data

Perform an online backup of the information store, system state data, and the IIS metabase.

Step 2: Dismount the Mailbox and the Public Information Store

Dismount the Mailbox and Public Information Store. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In the Microsoft Exchange System Manager, double-click the Servers container, double-click the server name where you intend to reinstall the components, and then double-click the correct storage group.
  2. Right-click Mailbox Store (ServerName), and then click Dismount Store.
  3. Right-click Public Folder Store (ServerName), and then click Dismount Store.

Step 3: Stop Exchange Services and Remove IIS

  1. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store "IS" services. To do so, in Computer Management, double-click Services and Applications, click Services, right-click Microsoft Exchange Information Store, and then click Stop.
  2. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the Program Files\Exchsrvr folder.
  3. Rename the MDBDATA folders on all drives to MDBDATAOLD, and then move them to another location, for example, C:\.

    Note If you have multiple MDBDATA folders, you must keep track of the original location of each folder.
  4. Remove IIS. To do so:
    1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
    3. Click Internet Information Services (IIS).
    4. Click Details.
    5. Click to clear the check boxes for all subcomponents except for Common Files, click OK, and then click Next.
    6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the process.

Step 4: Reinstall Internet Information Service and Reapply Service Packs

Note Make sure you have all current security patches and service packs locally available. To view and download the most current Service Packs and Security Patches visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  1. Disconnect the server from the network, and then reinstall Internet Information Services. To do so, in Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  2. Click to select the Internet Information Services (IIS) check box, and then click Details.
  3. Make sure that both the NNTP Service check box and the SMTP Service check box are selected, and then click OK.
  4. Click Next, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.
  5. Apply all current Windows 2000 service packs, hot fixes and security patches to the server, and then reconnect the server to the network.

Step 5: Reinstall Exchange Server

Note To install Exchange 2000 Server, you must log on with an account that has Exchange Full Administrator privileges. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  1. Insert the Exchange 2000 CD in the CD-ROM drive, and then start CD_Drive_Letter:\SETUP\I386\Setup.exe.

    Note If you are running Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 with Exchange 2000, follow these steps to reinstall Exchange 2000:
    1. Insert Small Business Server Setup Disc 1.
    2. Click Setup SBS, and then wait for the Setup components to load.
    3. Click Next through the initial Setup screens that display company and product information.
    4. Type the administrator password or click Manually log on, and then click Next.
    5. Click Next through the next three Setup screens.
    6. On the Component Selection screen, make sure that the Maintenance check box is selected.
    7. In the Microsoft Exchange 2000 box, click Reinstall.
    8. Click Next through the Setup screens until the installation begins.
    9. Click Finish when Setup prompts you to do so.
    10. Reapply all Exchange 2000 service packs and hotfixes, and then skip the remaining steps in this section (Step 5: Reinstall Exchange Server).
  2. In the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Installation Wizard, click Next.
  3. In the Action column, click reinstall for each installed component, click Next, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the Installation Wizard.
  4. Reapply all Exchange 2000 Service Packs and hot fixes.

Step 6: Restore the Original Exchange Information Store

  1. Use the method presented in the "Dismount the Mailbox and the Public Information Store" section of this article to dismount the Mailbox and Public Information Store.
  2. In Computer Management, double-click Services and Applications, click Services, right-click Microsoft Exchange Information Store, and then click Stop.
  3. Start Windows Explorer, open the Program Files\Exchsrvr folders, and then rename all the MDBDATA folders on all drives to MDBDATABLANK.
  4. Open the folder where you placed the MDBDATAOLD folder earlier (in step 3 of "Stop Exchange Services and Remove IIS"), and then rename MDBDATAOLD to MDBDATA.
  5. For each MDBDTAOLD folder, follow these steps:
    1. Rename MDBDATAOLD to MDBDATA.
    2. Move the MDBDATA folder that you just renamed to its original location.
  6. Move all folders that you moved in step 3 of "Stop Exchange Services and Remove IIS" back to their correct Program Files\Exchsrvr folders.
  7. Mount the Mailbox and Public Information Store. To do this, follow these steps.

    Note If you cannot mount the store when you follow these steps, restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, and then try these steps again.
    1. In the Microsoft Exchange System Manager, double-click the Servers container, double-click the server name where you intend to reinstall the components, and then double-click the correct storage group.
    2. Right-click Mailbox Store (ServerName), and then click Mount Store.
    3. Right-click Public Folder Store (ServerName), and then click Mount Store.
  8. Restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service and any other IIS and Exchange services that may be stopped.
