Windows 2000 WMI Query Only Returns 32 Disk Drives Although More Exist (320199)

SYMPTOMS

When you run a programmatic WMI query against "root\CIMV2" - "SELECT * FROM Win32_DiskDrive", only 32 disk drives are returned. This is \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0 through \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE31. Similarly, when you run CIM Studio and retrieve all instances of the Win32_DiskDrive class, only the same 32 disk drives are returned.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a hardcoded limit.

RESOLUTION

Service Pack Information

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
