This article describes how to use the WinStation Monitor tool to monitor Terminal Services client sessions. You can use the WinStation Monitor tool (Winsta.exe) to monitor the status of all users who are logged on to a Windows 2000-based Terminal Services server.

WinStation Monitor conserves resources and provides up-to-the-minute statistics, including the user name, domain, IP address, session ID, and connection status of currently logged-on users. This information may be useful when you are performing remote administration tasks.

To Install WinStation Monitor

The WinStation Monitor tool is included with the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit. You can also download the WinStation Monitor tool from the following Microsoft Web site: NOTE: WinStation Monitor runs only on Windows 2000-based servers that are running Terminal Services.

To Use WinStation Monitor

• On the View menu, click Refresh to manually refresh WinStation Monitor.
• On the View menu, click Show All to show all sessions instead of only active sessions.
• Click any column heading to sort data in ascending or descending order.
• To send a message to a user, right-click the user, and then click Send Message.
• When WinStation Monitor is minimized, you can hold the mouse pointer over the icon in the notification area on the right side of the taskbar to display the total number of sessions.
