SYMPTOMS

If you visit a Web site that requests a personal certificate, you may receive the following error message:
Security failure. Personal certificate required.
After you receive this error message, the Web page does not appear. This problem occurs even if the Web site permits but does not require a personal certificate.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

For security or identification purposes, a Web server may be configured either to request or to require a personal certificate (or client certificate) from a browser. If the Web site is configured to require a personal certificate, the browser must present a valid personal certificate before the browser can gain access to the site. If the site is configured to permit but not to require a personal certificate, providing a personal certificate to the Web site is optional.

Internet Explorer 5 for Macintosh does not currently support personal certificates. If a Web site is configured to require a personal certificate, the error message is by design. If a Web site is configured to allow but not to require a personal certificate, the error message is incorrect.
