XL2000: You Receive an Application Error When You Quit Excel with SharePoint Portal Server Client (319802)

SYMPTOMS

If you quit Microsoft Excel after you open an .xls file that has a Microsoft Outlook Express envelope in Excel 2000 with Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Client installed, Excel may generate the following application error:
Excel.exe - Application Error
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The instruction at "0x77fcb892" referenced memory at "0xXXXXXXXX".
The memory could not be "written"

Click on OK to terminate the application.
Click on CANCEL to debug the application. [OK] [Cancel]
The following event ID messages may be logged in the Application event log:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Application Popup
Event Category: None
Event ID: 26
Description:

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3).
