"Failed to save document" error message when you try to save a map in Streets & Trips or in MapPoint (319687)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a map in Microsoft Streets & Trips or in Microsoft MapPoint 2004 North American Maps, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Failed to save document.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when you try to save a map in a folder whose name contains an invalid character.

The error may also occur if the map file has become corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Save the map to a different folder

  1. Locate the map that you want to save.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. Locate a folder that is different from the folder where you originally tried to save the map, and then click Save.

Method 2: Rename the folder that contains the invalid character

  1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the folder where you want to save the map.
  3. Right-click the folder, and then click Rename.
  4. Type a new name that contains only letters, and then press ENTER.

    If you receive a confirmation message, click Yes.
  5. Save the map in this renamed folder.

MORE INFORMATION

This may also occur in previously saved documents if the document is corrupted. The resolution in the case of a corrupted file is to recreate the map.
