SYMPTOMS

When you use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to publish through an HTTP proxy server, you may receive the following error message:
A web does not exist at 'ftp location'. Would you like FrontPage to create a web at that location?
If you click OK, and then type your user name and password, you receive the following error message:
Could not find a web server at 'ftp location'. Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service.

CAUSE

Your HTTP Proxy Server permits only read access to FTP sites. FrontPage must be able to use the FTP protocol for both reading and writing when it publishes to FTP servers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either a Winsock Proxy client or an FTP Gateway.

To Use Microsoft Winsock Proxy Clients

Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server and Microsoft Proxy Server technologies provide a Winsock Proxy client that permits read and write access through a proxy server.

For more information about these products, please visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

To Use an FTP Gateway

An FTP Gateway permits read and write access by acting as a translator for FTP requests. (To see if your network has an FTP gateway installed, please ask your network administrator.)

To configure your Internet Options to use an FTP Gateway, follow the appropriate steps for your version of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

If You Have Internet Explorer 5.x or 6.x Installed

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Connections tab.
  4. Click LAN Settings.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Click to clear the Use the same proxy server for all protocols check box.
  7. In the FTP and Port boxes, specify the protocol, the FTP server location, and the port number, for example:

    ftp://server location:21

  8. Click OK three times.

If You Have Internet Explorer 4.x Installed

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Connection tab.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Click to clear the Use the same proxy server for all protocols check box.
  6. In the FTP and Port boxes, specify the protocol, the FTP server location, and the port number, for example:

    ftp://server location:21

  7. Click OK two times.
