IntelliMouse: Error message after you install an IntelliMouse pointing device (319466)

This article was previously published under Q319466 SYMPTOMS After you install a Microsoft IntelliMouse pointing device,
you receive an error message that is similar to one of the following:
PS/2 port mouse has not passed Windows logo testing to
verify its compatibility with Windows XP. USB
Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer has not passed Windows logo testing to verify
its compatibility with Windows XP. The specified
location does not contain information about your hardware. An error occurred during the installation of the device. The
driver selected for this device does not support Windows
2000. CAUSE This issue may occur if the Ipfilter.inf file has become
corrupted or if you have a version of the Ipfilter.inf file that is not
compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000.RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, delete the Ipfilter.inf file, and
then reinstall the mouse drivers. To do this, follow these
steps. Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the
following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your
product documentation to complete these steps.
- Click Start, and then click
Search.
- Click All Files and Folders.
- In the All or part of the file name box,
type oem*.inf, in the A word of phrase in the
file box, type ipfilter.inf, in the
Look in box, click Local Hard Drive (C:), and
then click Search.
- When the search process is complete, delete all the files
that are found.
When the confirmation message appears, click
Yes. - Click Start, and then click
Control Panel.
- Double-click System.
- Click the Hardware tab.
- Click Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing
devices.
- Right-click the IntelliMouse device that you want to
remove, and then click Uninstall.
When the
confirmation message appears, click Yes.
Note Your mouse does not function at this point. - Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu, use
the arrow keys to select Shut Down, and then press ENTER.
- Use the arrow keys to select Restart, and then press ENTER to restart the computer.
When your computer restarts, Microsoft Windows automatically
detects the hardware change.
