Money: "Error 1911 - Could Not Register Type Library" Error Message When You Try to Install Money (319302)

This article was previously published under Q319302 SYMPTOMS When you try to install Money, you receive an error message
similar to the following Error 1911 - Could not register
type library for file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\Investor\filename where
filename is the name of the .ocx file (for example, Inv8.ocx, Inv9.ocx, Inv10.ocx, Inv12.ocx, or Inv13.ocx). CAUSE This behavior may occur if an .ocx file is corrupted or not
installed. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, use method 1 first, and if that
doesn't resolve the issue, use method 2. If method 2 doesn't resolve the issue,
use method 3. Method 1: Rename the Corrupted Files and Reinstall Money
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the
following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your
product documentation to complete these steps. - Click Start, and then click Search.
- Click All Files and Folders.
- In the All or part of the file name box,
type inv*.ocx.
- In the Look in list, click Local
Hard Drives (C:) under My Computer, and then click Search. Under More Advanced Options, make sure to select search hidden files or folders.
NOTE: If you installed Money to a different drive, click the
appropriate location. - When the search process is complete, right-click any file
that is found, and then click Rename.
- Rename the file and give it the extension
".old."
- If you are prompted to confirm, click Yes.
- If the search finds more than one file, repeat steps 5
through 7 to rename each file that appears.
- Insert the Money CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
- If the Money installation program starts automatically,
follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
If
the Money installation program does not start automatically, follow these
steps:
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add or Remove
Programs.
- Click Add New Programs.
- Click CD or Floppy.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the
installation process.
NOTE: If method 1 does not resolve this issue, continue to method 2. Method 2: Upgrade MDAC and the Microsoft Jet Components- To upgrade MDAC, follow these steps:
- Start your Web browser, and then visit the following
Microsoft Web site:
- Click the latest version of Microsoft Data Access
Components (MDAC), and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and
install the program.
- To upgrade Microsoft Jet Components, follow these steps:
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- Click the latest version of Microsoft Jet, and then
follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the
program.
- Install Money by following steps 9 and 10 in method
1.
NOTE: If method 2 does not resolve this issue and your computer runs
Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), or Microsoft
Windows Millennium Edition (Me), continue to method 3. Method 3: Change the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Drive Cache Setting and Remove DMANOTE: Use this method only if your computer runs Windows 98, Windows
98 SE, or Windows Me. You cannot change the drive cache setting in Microsoft
Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP.
- If your computer runs Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE, skip to
step 5.
If your computer runs Windows Me, click Start, and then click Run. - In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- Click the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box, and then click OK.
- When you are prompted, restart your computer.
- Reduce the performance optimization settings of your CD-ROM
drive or DVD-ROM drive. To do this, follow these steps.
NOTE: Before you change any of the settings in this step, make a note
of the current settings so that you can return the drive to these settings
later in this procedure.
- On the desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- Expand CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, as appropriate for your computer.
- Double-click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Click to clear the DMA check box, and then click OK.
- Click the Performance tab, and then click File System.
- On the CD-ROM tab, drag the Supplemental Cache Size slider to Small.
- Click the Troubleshooting tab, click to select each check box except the Disable
all 32-bit protected-mode disk drivers check box, and then click OK.
NOTE: If you are using Windows Me, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.
- Restart your computer.
- Install Money.
- Return the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive to its original
settings. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- Expand CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, as appropriate for your computer.
- Double-click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Click to select the DMA check box, and then click OK.
- Click the Performance tab, and then click File
System.
- On the CD-ROM tab, drag the Supplemental Cache Size slider to the original setting.
- Click the Troubleshooting tab, click to clear the Disable all 32-bit protected-mode
disk drivers check box, and then click OK.
- Restart your computer.
