SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade from a trial version of Microsoft Money to the retail version of Money you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
There is another copy of Microsoft Money on this computer. Before you can install a new copy of Money, you must uninstall the old copy. To uninstall Money, use the Add/Remove program feature in the Control Panel.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you did not completely remove the trial version of Money before you tried to install the retail version. An incomplete removal may occur if you used a third-party removal utility that did not remove all the files, or if you tried to manually remove the trial version but did not remove all the files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they appear in.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Method 1: Remove the trial version and install the retail version

Remove the trial version of Money

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Moneyversion, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove Money.

Install the retail version of Money

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Add New Programs.
  4. Click CD or Floppy.
  5. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.
Note If you receive the error message, try to reinstall the trial version, and then try the two previous procedures again.

Reinstall the trial version of Money

  1. Insert the Money Trial CD in your CD or DVD drive.

    If you downloaded the Trial version from the following Microsoft Money Web site, re-download it, and then go to step 6:
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Click Add New Programs.
  5. Click CD or Floppy.
  6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation process.
