"Shell_NotifyIcon Fail" Error Message Occurs When You Log On to Windows 2000 (319008)

SYMPTOMS

When you log on to Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Shell_NotifyIcon Fail
You may receive this error message repeatedly when you first log on to Windows.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you installed a UMAX VistaScan scanner and you configured the VistaAccess program (that is included with the UMAX VistaScan scanner) to automatically load from the Windows Startup folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the shortcut to the UMAX VistaAccess program from the Startup folder:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Startup, and then right-click UMAX VistaAccess.
  2. Click Delete.
  3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.

    NOTE: If you remove this shortcut, you do not remove the UMAX VistaAccess program. To run the program, click Start, point to Programs, and then click the program.
  4. Restart the computer.

This issue occurs only if the UMAX VistaAccess program tries to automatically load from the Windows 2000 Startup folder. If you remove this program from the Startup folder, and then manually run it, you do not receive the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
