SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Microsoft Picture It!, you receive an error message similar to the following
Error 1317 An error occurred while attempting to create the directory drive:\location
where drive is a drive letter and location is the path where Picture It! should be installed.
CAUSE
This error can occur when there is an incorrect path in the Microsoft Windows registry.
RESOLUTIONWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
To resolve this issue, edit the registry. Change all instances of the drive and path shown in the error message to the correct path, and then reinstall Picture It!. NOTE: This path may vary on your computer. If the steps that follow do not resolve the issue, repeat these steps using the path D:\Documents and Settings\ USER_NAME\My Pictures and replace it with C:\Documents and Settings\ USER_NAME\My Pictures, where USER_NAME is the name of the current user.
To do this, follow these steps: - Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- On the Edit menu, click Find.
- In the Find what box, type D:\My Pictures.
- Select the Data check box, and clear all the other check boxes.
- Click Find Next.
- Change all instances of D:\My Pictures to C:\My Pictures. (As it is explained in the earlier note, this path may vary.)
- Restart your computer.
- Insert the Picture It! CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
- If the Picture It! Setup dialog box does not appear, click
Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click Add New Programs.
- Click CD or Floppy.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
