The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office XP Developer

This article was previously published under Q318757

SYMPTOMS

When you try to package a Microsoft Access database that is in the Access 2002 file format by starting the Microsoft Office XP Packaging Wizard from the Start menu, you may receive the following error message:
The file that you specified could not be opened. Possible reasons for this include:
  • Access is not installed on your computer.
  • The version of Access installed on your computer is incompatible with this file.
  • The file you specified is not a valid Access file.

CAUSE

If you opened Microsoft Access 2000 before you started the Packaging Wizard, the Packaging Wizard uses Microsoft Access 2000 as the existing instance of Microsoft Access. Microsoft Access 2000 does not recognize the Microsoft Access 2002 file format.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps to package the Access database that is in the Access 2002 file format:
  1. Open the Access 2002 database that is in the Access 2002 file format.
  2. Press ALT+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.
  3. On the Add-ins menu, click Packaging Wizard.
NOTE: If the Packaging Wizard is not listed on the Add-ins menu, click Add-in Manager to load the Packaging Wizard. When you start the Packaging Wizard in this way, it will use the existing instance of Access (2002) instead of creating a new one (2000).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

NOTE: Upgrading to Microsoft Office 2000 Professional SR-1 on a computer on which you have already installed Microsoft Office XP Developer may not resolve the issue.
