SYMPTOMS
When you try to connect your Sony digital video (DV) camera that uses IEEE 1394 (FireWire) technology to your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, Windows XP may not correctly detect the camera. When you plug the camera into the FireWire port on your computer, or when you turn on the power to your camera while it is connected to your computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
An error has occurred with your capture device.
Additionally, if you look for your DV camera in Device Manager when this issue occurs, your DV camera may be displayed by a label that is similar to the following:

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
